🇪🇺 EU Keeps Its US Trade Deal on Ice
The European Parliament's trade committee voted on March 4 to keep the EU–US trade deal frozen. The reason? Washington can't guarantee it will honour the 15% tariff ceiling both sides agreed to last summer.
The confusion started after the US Supreme Court struck down Trump's IEEPA-based tariffs in February. The replacement tariffs under Section 122 technically push effective rates on some EU goods above that 15% ceiling — which the EU says is a direct violation of the Turnberry deal.
Committee chair Bernd Lange put it plainly: "Businesses and consumers need a stable tariff regime, and we still don't have that." The European Commission is expected to brief lawmakers on March 10, with a potential vote on March 18–19.
My take:
Europe isn't being difficult here. They signed a deal, and now the other side can't legally guarantee what it agreed to. That's not a trade dispute — that's a credibility problem on Washington's side. The EU is right to wait.

🇧🇷 Brazil Ratifies EU–Mercosur Deal — 25 Years in the Making
On March 4, Brazil's Senate unanimously ratified the EU–Mercosur trade agreement, completing the legislative process in South America's largest economy. Argentina and Uruguay had already ratified. Paraguay is expected to follow soon.
The deal, signed in Asunción on January 17, 2026, creates a free trade area covering 700 million people and over €111 billion in annual bilateral trade. Tariffs on over 90% of goods will be eliminated over 15 years.
The EU's Commission President von der Leyen had already announced provisional implementation on February 27 — calling it "one of the most consequential agreements of the first half of this century."
France remains the loudest critic. French farmers rolled tractors into Paris, Brussels, and Warsaw in protest over fears of cheaper South American agricultural imports. They lost the vote 21–5.
My take:
This deal didn't just happen because of good diplomacy. It happened because the US became an unreliable trade partner under Trump and both sides needed alternatives. The world isn't waiting for Washington to sort itself out. It's moving on.

🇺🇸🇪🇸 Trump Threatens to Cut All Trade With Spain — Over an Iran War Base Dispute
On March 3, Trump told reporters at the White House: "We're going to cut off all trade with Spain. We don't want anything to do with Spain."
The trigger: Spain refused to allow the US to use jointly operated military bases in southern Spain for strikes against Iran. The US and Israel launched "Operation Epic Fury" over the weekend. Spain's Foreign Minister said the bases would not be used for anything outside the UN Charter.
Trump also cited Spain's refusal to meet NATO's 5% GDP defense spending target. The US relocated 15 aircraft, including refuelling tankers, from bases in Rota and Morón.
Spain pushed back. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called the US-Israel strikes a "disaster" and said Spain had the resources to contain the impact of any US trade embargo. The EU expressed full solidarity with Madrid, with European Council President Costa calling it a threat against the entire bloc.
My take:
Threatening a NATO ally with a full trade embargo because they won't lend their sovereign territory for a military operation — that's not a trade policy. That's coercion. Spain was within its legal and moral rights. And the fact that Trump did this right after the Supreme Court knocked down his tariff powers says everything about how he views trade: as a weapon, not a tool. The EU is right to treat this as a collective issue.

🏁 Conclusion
Three stories, one clear pattern: trade is no longer just economics — it's geopolitics, military leverage, and sovereignty all rolled into one. The US Supreme Court clipped Trump's tariff powers. His response has been to find new ways to punish countries that don't comply. Meanwhile, the rest of the world — Europe, South America, India — is building trade architecture that doesn't depend on Washington's mood.
The deals being signed today will outlast the politics driving them.
