The Iran war started exactly four weeks after the largest Epstein file dump in history. Google searches for Epstein files collapsed overnight. And the files are not in Iran. So what exactly is going on?
What the Epstein Files Actually Contain
On January 30, 2026, the US Department of Justice released what is now the largest single dump of Epstein-related documents in history. Over three million pages. Around 180,000 images. Thousands of videos. All of it mandated by the Epstein Files Transparency Act, which Congress passed in November 2025 and Trump signed into law.
The files include FBI interview summaries, flight logs, financial records, internal DOJ memos, personal emails, and photographs spanning decades of Epstein's life and network. The DOJ had made a smaller initial release in December 2025, heavily criticised at the time for extensive redactions. Hundreds of pages entirely blacked out.
But here is the part that keeps getting buried: the DOJ has identified six million total pages of evidence. Only 3.5 million have been released. Roughly half remains sealed, redacted, or withheld. One 119-page document marked “Grand Jury-NY” is completely blacked out. A set of three consecutive documents totalling 255 pages is fully redacted. At least 16 files that were initially posted later disappeared from the public database, including a photograph of President Trump.
NPR found those missing files through independent investigation and forced a further release. The DOJ added 16 more pages. As of this writing, NPR's count shows 37 pages still missing. The DOJ has also said 47,635 additional files were taken offline for further review and redaction.
Who Is in Them — Verified Names Only
One thing needs saying before any list of names: appearing in the Epstein files is not evidence of crime. Flight logs, emails, calendar entries, and photographs can all place someone in Epstein's orbit without any wrongdoing. That is not a technicality. It is a fact that matters. With that said, here is who has been verified in the documents:
United States: Former President Bill Clinton appears in multiple photographs and emails. President Donald Trump appears in photographs and in FBI interview summaries. A single woman, whose identity is redacted, told FBI agents in 2019 that Epstein introduced her to Trump in the 1980s, when she was between 13 and 15 years old, and that Trump sexually assaulted her. These allegations are uncorroborated. The DOJ itself has cautioned that some Trump-related documents include “untrue and sensationalist claims.” The FBI interviewed the woman four times; agents did not publicly determine the credibility of her account, and she eventually ended contact with them. Trump has flatly denied any wrongdoing. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick appears in communications and has agreed to testify before lawmakers. Former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers appears in emails. Filmmaker Woody Allen, former White House adviser Steve Bannon, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Al Gore, and Bill Richardson are all named. Elon Musk appears in calendar entries for proposed meetings; he says he declined every approach from Epstein. Bill Gates is photographed at Epstein properties, their relationship documented extensively in emails.
United Kingdom: Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, formerly Prince Andrew, is named several hundred times. King Charles III stripped him of all royal titles in October 2025. In February 2026, he was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office, specifically for allegedly forwarding confidential government trade documents to Epstein while serving as UK trade envoy. He was released after 11 hours and remains under investigation. He has not been charged and denies wrongdoing.
Peter Mandelson, the former UK ambassador to the United States, was fired by Prime Minister Keir Starmer in September 2025 after earlier Epstein emails emerged. The January 2026 file release brought fresh allegations: that Mandelson had passed sensitive UK government financial information to Epstein when he was business secretary during the 2008 financial crisis. He resigned from the House of Lords and the Labour Party in February 2026, then was arrested on February 23 on suspicion of misconduct in public office. He was released on bail and remains under investigation. He has not been charged and denies wrongdoing. The UK government had been warned that appointing him carried “reputational risk,” according to documents released by Starmer's administration. Starmer appointed him anyway.
Israel: Former Prime Minister Ehud Barak is one of the most frequently named international figures in the files, appearing in communications, visitor logs, and photographs. Documents show Epstein funded Israeli organisations including Friends of the Israeli Defence Forces and the Jewish National Fund. The FBI received a tip that Epstein may have been an Israeli intelligence asset. No declassified US government document has confirmed this. Former Prime Ministers Naftali Bennett and Benjamin Netanyahu have both publicly dismissed the intelligence allegation as unfounded.
Dubai/UAE: Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, CEO and chair of DP World, resigned after his name appeared in the document release. Reuters confirmed the resignation was directly tied to Epstein file scrutiny.
Slovakia: Miroslav Lajcak, national security adviser to Prime Minister Robert Fico and a former foreign minister, resigned after his name appeared in Epstein correspondence.
Other countries: Saudi Arabia figures appear in emails about the Aramco IPO. Qatar's Sheikh Jabor Yousuf Jassim al-Thani is named in correspondence where Epstein advised Qatar on the 2017 Gulf blockade. Turkey's prosecutors launched an investigation after the files referenced alleged trafficking of Turkish children. Lithuania's president called for a law enforcement inquiry. Norway's former Prime Minister Thorbjorn Jagland, who later headed the Nobel Committee and the Council of Europe, is also named.
The Middle East Connection
This is where verified facts start mixing with allegations that range from credible to conspiratorial. So let's separate them clearly.
What the documents confirm: Epstein had financial and advisory ties across the Middle East. He funded Israeli organisations. He advised Qatari figures during the 2017 Gulf blockade, urging Doha to normalize ties with Israel to improve its standing with the Trump administration. Saudi Aramco's potential IPO was discussed in his private emails. An email from American biologist Robert Trivers, dated March 2018, references a meeting between Epstein and former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in New York. DP World's CEO in Dubai resigned directly because of file scrutiny.
On the Iran connection specifically: Steven Hoffenberg, a former Epstein associate, has claimed that Epstein was involved in selling Chinese weapons to Iran through state-owned company Norinco during the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s. This claim appears in documents and in journalist Whitney Webb's book One Nation Under Blackmail. Iran International covered these documents in February 2026. None of these older allegations have been independently verified or prosecuted.
Viral social media claims that Iran has released its own Epstein files are false. Multiple fact-checkers have confirmed this is disinformation. Iran has no verified Epstein files.
The Mossad spy allegation persists in public discourse. The FBI received a tip. No declassified US document has confirmed it. It remains unverified.
The Timing Problem
Here is a sequence of events worth reading slowly.
June 5, 2025: Elon Musk publicly states Trump appears in the Epstein files.
June 13, 2025: Israel launches surprise strikes on Iranian nuclear and military facilities, starting what became the Twelve-Day War. The US joined on June 22, bombing Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan with bunker-buster bombs. A US-brokered ceasefire took effect on June 24.
January 30, 2026: The largest Epstein document release hits the public. FBI interview summaries, photographs, emails. Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor arrested. Mandelson fired, later arrested. Scrutiny of Trump, Clinton, Gates, Lutnick, and others intensifies globally.
February 28, 2026: Four weeks after that document dump, the US and Israel launch Operation Epic Fury against Iran. Iran's Supreme Leader Khamenei is killed in the initial strikes. Brent crude jumps. Every front page switches. Google searches for the Epstein files collapse.
That last data point is not a partisan talking point. Shaiel Ben-Ephraim, of Atlas Global Strategies and a former Israeli diplomat, told Al Jazeera that searches for the Epstein files had plummeted since the war started. “At least temporarily, it's succeeding,” he said. “It's taking up Congress' time and it's taking up the media's time.”
Republican Congressman Thomas Massie, one of the architects of the Epstein Files Transparency Act, wrote on X on March 1, 2026: “Bombing a country on the other side of the globe won't make the Epstein files go away.” He also called the Iran strikes “unauthorized acts of war.” Massie is a Republican. That makes his criticism harder to write off as partisan opposition.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in a candid statement, acknowledged that the US knew an Israeli action was coming and knew it would trigger attacks on American forces. They went in anyway. Read that twice.
Iran's regime has leaned hard into the distraction narrative. Iranian state media released an animated video showing Trump, Netanyahu, and Satan reading Epstein files before a missile strike. The Iranian regime is not a neutral party here and has every incentive to push this framing. The Washington Post reported that pro-Tehran accounts and disinformation networks have been mixing legitimate questions with fabricated claims to push the narrative globally. That does not make the legitimate questions disappear. It just means the source of information matters.
Is the War a Distraction? What Analysts Say
Ben-Ephraim's assessment is that the war's timing is primarily about domestic politics in both the US and Israel, with very little strategic rationale behind it. He pointed to Trump's approval ratings at their worst and a worsening economy. Netanyahu, facing possible elections as soon as June, also has reasons to want a military operation running.
House Democrat Jamie Raskin and other members of Congress have explicitly linked the war to Epstein file scrutiny. These are political figures with obvious partisan motivations. That context is worth holding in mind.
On the other side, the White House and its supporters argue the Iran strikes were about nuclear threats, Iranian proxy attacks on US forces, and a long-standing strategic objective of eliminating Iran's nuclear programme. These are legitimate national security arguments backed by years of bipartisan policy history.
The honest answer is that both things can be true at the same time. Governments rarely go to war for a single reason. A war can be triggered by real strategic interests and still be politically useful at home. The distraction does not have to be the only reason to be one of the reasons. That is not a conspiracy theory. That is how power works.
What is verifiable: Epstein file searches collapsed after the war started. Major political figures named in the files have faced measurably less media scrutiny since February 28. The DOJ released 16 more pages under press pressure on March 6, mid-war. The files are still being processed, fought over, and partially withheld. The war did not close the case.
The distraction war theory is easy to dismiss and easy to believe. Neither response is intellectually honest. What the facts show is this: powerful people across multiple countries are named in documents that have barely been processed. Half the total evidence is still sealed. The DOJ withheld files related to the sitting president until press investigation forced their release. A war started four weeks after the biggest document dump. Search interest in the files fell overnight. These are verifiable facts, not conspiracy. Whether they add up to a deliberate cover-up or a coincidence of terrible timing is something each reader must decide. But the files exist. The names are real. The redactions are real. No bomb dropped on Tehran has changed any of that.
What We Know. What We Don't.
What is confirmed: Millions of Epstein documents are public. Named individuals span multiple countries. Several have resigned, been arrested, or face ongoing scrutiny, though none of the most prominent figures have been charged yet. The DOJ withheld roughly half of all identified evidence. Missing files were found through independent press investigation. Epstein had documented ties to Israel and the Gulf, and correspondence that references Iran. The US-Israel war on Iran started four weeks after the largest file release. Epstein searches fell sharply when it did. Republican lawmakers themselves have publicly called it a distraction.
What is not confirmed: That Epstein was a Mossad agent. That Iran has its own Epstein files. That the war was launched solely to bury the scandal. That every person named committed a crime. That the Trump allegation from one FBI interview is true. It remains uncorroborated and disputed. Those are allegations, social media claims, or unverified speculation.
Thomas Massie put it plainly: the files are not in Iran. They are at the DOJ. Some are still missing. The war has not changed that.
